Bear Dog
Does a dog giving a bear hug show dominance?
My friend has an alaskan malamute, and just the other day, it climbed up and gave me what you could call a bear hug and started licking me.
Out of interest, does this show dominance or affection in the dog or does it depend on the breed or personality of the dog?
It was purely affection. Incidentally, licking is a submissive behavior in dogs.
Please consider that an owner controls *everything* the dog needs to survive: food, water, shelter, place to sleep, ability to exercise, play time and more. The dog is *aware* of this so there is no need to assert any more dominance over a dog when you already control everything of any importance.
